I've just finished a miniature glossary of some of Yi's key terms and phrases, called 'Words of Change'. What I haven't done so far is write a 'salesy' description so I can add it to the 'Products and services' section. So...

...right now it is only available to Friends and customers and for half its real price.

You'll find it hidden away on your account page - click where it says '**Select Product**' and you'll see this at the top of the list for all of £2.50 (which is about $5 in US money).

During the week I will get that sales page set up, and then next Saturday (10th) I'll make the book available to all for £5 (aka $10 or so). So if you'd like it at half price, now is a good time to pick it up. ;)

Quick description: the book(let) covers these words and phrases -
  • 'setting out to bring order'
  • 'dao'
  • 'wading the great river'
  • 'direction to go' and 'no direction brings harvest'
  • horses
  • carts
  • compass directions
  • small people and the 'noble man'
  • 'seeing the great person'
  • kings
  • feudal lords
  • good fortune and misfortune
  • regrets and shame
  • 'no mistake'
  • 'nothing that does not bring harvest'
  • blunder
  • danger
  • hardship
  • 'creating success from the source, harvest in constancy' (yuan heng li zhen, separately and together)
- not as a comprehensive dictionary or very in-depth cultural history or what-have-you (it's only 30-some pages long), but as a quick reference to give you useful ideas about what these things might mean in your reading, and how you can apply and use them.

This is designed to be used alongside a translation, and I've included a clickable index for several translations: Wilhelm/Baynes, Karcher (Total I Ching and How to Use/ Plain and Simple), the Ritsema/Sabbadini book, Balkin, Alfred Huang, RJ Lynn and LiSe's site.

You receive, say, hexagram 45, read the words 'it furthers one to undertake something' in your trusty W/B, and click 'Wilhelm/Baynes' in the Table of Contents. You scroll down the list of entries and find:
"Undertake (something/ anything) 2.0, 3.0, 14.2, 22.0, 25.0, 25.2, 41.0, 41.6, 42.0,
43.0, 45.0
Undertakings, undertake something 11.1, 41.2, 54.0, 54.1"
There are two entries, because there are two different Chinese expressions W/B translate with the same English words. You click the first entry, that mentions 45.0, and are transported instantly to the entry for 'Having a direction to go'.
This gives you a 'literal meaning', 'related English phrases', 'ideas for interpretation' and 'example applications' for the phrase. (That's the format for most of the entries.)

This is an ebook - pdf format, compatible with all computers, instantly accessible (no postal delays), searchable, copy-paste-able (eg into a readings journal), clickable (in a way that paper reference books sadly aren't), and also - in case you're not as enamoured as I am of reading on computer screens - printable.

Price now: £2.50
Price after 10th May: £5
If you'd like a copy, please buy one. Thank you.
:bows:

P.S. Just realised I should explain where this came from. I'd already almost finished it when I started my whole big 59-ing request for help and feedback here, and it's also one of the things I'd promised to Yijing Class people. So that's why the first thing I do after writing long posts about not just producing things ready-made, but consulting with you on menu and recipes, is to produce something ready-made. It's one I made earlier. ;)

Words of Change gives history and practical oracle use...

I have only had time to look over the text briefly...however, it is a delightful collection of major words in the Yi with their Chinese ideograms and philology as well as what they could mean in a specific oracle reading on YOUR personal questions.

I have found that this literal approach to the received text should not be ignored, although it does tend to describe the perspective of the Ancient Establishment upon your oracle and not the various alternatives which would be more supportive of personal feelings. It is important to at least listen to both.

A sturdy list of Yi keywords, to be sure. But why 'horses' and 'carts'?

Not because they're especially hard to translate. ;) It's just that when a modern reader looks at something about 'using the strength of a horse' or the noble one getting a cart, it can be tricky to see how to apply this.

Thanks, Frank and Luis. :)

whoo-hoo

Just picked up my copy. I'm busy assigning it a suitable place in my folders for easy access and reference. Excellent job Hiliary!

Highly recommended for amateur and scholar alike. What a snip too!
