Your grandson playing, and interpreting Yijing readings, are not the same. A reading is a response to some sort of inquiry, for one.

Also, it's an interesting approach to type out many, many paragraphs of opinion and then declare the topic closed. Closed might be a good place for it, though.

The process of 50 ' Establishing the New' can be explained as follows:

50.1 < > 14 (Great Harvest)
- The 'Bin Men' are coming on Tuesday. Rubbish has accumulated, and it'll be hard work, so make your very best efforts to clean out the bin; reaching as deeply as you are able into it.

50.2 < > 56 (Travelling)
- it's all pretty gunked up in there, even around the edges - worse than imagined. You don't know what diseases might be floating around so a word to the wise and be careful, but whatever you do don'r over react.

50.3 < > 64 (Not Yet Fulfilled)
- Sort the wheat from the chaff and make sure you hose everything down as you go. Whatever you do don't give yourself a hard time, you are doing the best you can.

50.4 < > 18 (Remedying)

- Always remember that the obstacle is the path. When you feel yourself trembling its the first sign that the blockage is being slowly moved through the body. It's a bit early to dance but the signs are promising.

50.5 < > 44 ( Encountering)
- All the doors have been flung open and jade doorknobs fitted. You may not be fully back in the driving seat, but you now have the flexibility to reach for those new doorknobs.Tell everyone that that is what you are doing, not everyone locked in the dungeons know this yet..

50.6 < > 32 (Long Lasting)
- You are going to have to keep your foot on the throttle and aim for the stars. In this way you can always maintain a healthy distance between you and your inner outlaws and keep your outer adversaries who are still stalking you beyond arms reach.

Remember, too, that that this is just the establish a new way of being, the shaking that started in 50.4 is going to become greater the deeper you connect with the cosmos, and look more deeply into the eyes of God. The Transformation is well underway and now needs some stabilising action.

I don't think that we are seeing things the same way, and I'm not sure that we will. You are right I did feel a great need to type all this out and make a public post. Challenging what has been said before felt the right thing today. My long post was more for me and not really for anyone else. I needed to say these things in public, to challenge what I saw as an injustice and limitations place on Hex 50 from my perspective. I needed other people to hear and see my words for no other reason than that: to be seen and heard. This is my respectful bow towards establishing something new in my life and introducing new behaviours that will distance me from the old outlaws and gremlins in my world.

This 50 portion of the thread is becoming a powerful Ding for me.

I'll leave these posts here for others to read them too and make up their own minds, as you already have, about what my opinions on aspects of the symbolism and the use of imagination when engaging with Yi might mean for them. I don't really mind whether others agree with me or not which is the main reason why I have no great desire to either defend or expand what I have said. I have expressed one of my truths and where is there to go beyond that?

If you or others want to discuss any of what I have written further within the bounds of this thread, then please do. I will read them with great interest.

Many interesting ideas here. I’m going to stop posting for a bit as the holiday preparations need my focus. Be well everybody!

Happy New Year Everyone.
The Christmas period brought me a wonderful present and while I have already shared it in Exploring Divination as the Moana thread, it seemed appropriate to add it here, too, as we are now nearing the end of the 41-50 decad. It makes for a good summary from one perspective.

Yeah, my-key. The hexagrams from 41 - 50 are indeed worth careful consideration. Like I’m feeling I should have paid more attention to the caution in 49.1 - which Wilhelm interprets as wearing shoes made of very soft leather, meaning, “tread softly!”- and recognized my own unique perspective about the ting being comparable to a scrying bowl needed to be presented very gently.

So first, so sorry for any confusion caused by my pointing out the similarities between the sacred ting and a scrying bowl. My thinking evolved as I considered 47 as saying one reaches a stage where one realizes they cannot progress any further on their own in the outer world and must turn around and look within.
48. The Well then seemed to me to symbolize this introspection and a search for a way, a tool, to bring up to the conscious mind the insights thus discovered from going within. This tool, the “bucket”, I hypothesized, is the Ting, but could be any tool for reaching into our inner selves such as a scrying bowl, an astrological chart or even the I Ching itself, anything that helps one get past their own ego and see a broader perspective.
49. Could be the Revolutionary idea that by engaging with our own depths, through meditation, scrying or “calculating the heavenly signs” (astrology) or what ever method one chooses we can each individually transform our perceptions, leading to rebirth and eternal life and the awareness at 50 that a noble one can see for herself, can understand and consolidate her destiny - no outside gurus required!

Anyway, the point is all this leads me to see the IChing urging us to trust our instincts. 50 reassures us that it is indeed possible for individuals to draw insights up from one’s own unconscious just as one uses a bucket to draw water up from a well.

Interesting how 50. The Ting, an all encompassing bowl capable of holding all that is, is followed by a sage holding only a small ladle. Big bowl - tiny spoon. Is this is why 51 represents Shock? Perhaps 51 tells us that whatever we are seeing, its only a small part of the Devine Plan - so just keep calm (52. Still!) and carry on.

The Bach flower essences for 51. Star of Bethlehem. Advised for extreme panic.

Hi Rosada
Before you move on into 51, I've been thinking about what you have written here already about 50. Especially how it relates to standing in your power, in the face of old adversaries and the uniqueness of insights gained through 'peak experiences' - that wonderful moment where you sense something greater than yourself is dealing you a hand that you could never have imagined unfold.

These moments can never be denied by others and will never be understood by others in the way you understand them yourself. In that way they are truly transformational for you. You've had one while preparing the family soup. I can offer similar experiences while mundanely staring at the pattern in a carpet, sitting quietly in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and swimming with dolphins in Australia.

I am sure that others who read this will be able to align yours and mine peak (transformational) experiences with a whole host of their own. Acknowledging positively any peak transformational experience (yours, mine or anyone else's) is a true veneration of God based in awe, fear and reverence, while any other response to any peak experience is just plain disrespectful to Him and the recipient.

It's also interesting that I have just finished reading a lecture given by Richard J. Smith, that popped up in my inbox. Titled "The Book of Changes as a Mirror of the Mind: The Evolution of the Zhouyi in China and Beyond" he offers a perspective that scholarly exploration of the Yijing has become too narrow and has lost the full range and richness that early Chinese thinkers held. Additionally, he advocates that greater cross cultural comparisons with sacred texts e.g. Bible, Qu'ran, Rigveda etc and established indigenous cultural folklore would enhance the cultural insights of our global community. I guess the Bach Flower essences would fall within this category - although he makes no mention of them in his paper :) .

Insights, especially those based in transformational peak experience, can only bring better understanding of the I Ching nuances to our cultural soup and 'sailing beyond the reef' to abolish the old and establish the new, by way of the Sistine Chapel, scrying bowls and looking at the face of God through a mirror can only add to the richness of the tapestry being woven in this thread.

Hoping here to end my contributions to 50 on a musical theme.

There may be a few young whippersnappers reading this post who have never had their hearts and minds opened by the magical wisdoms contained within this 1970 classic (?) sung by that famous beat combo 'The Pipkins'. Like a good wine this song has mellowed and matured by being left undisturbed in a dusty cellar for 55 years. Some may say that I should have left it there.

Enjoy!

Hexagram 50 is known as The Vessel, while hexagram 51 is called Shock (Hilary).

Btw, I think I should mention here that while I am using Hilary’s translation, “I Ching Walking Your Path, Creating Your Future,” the musings I’m posting about these hexagrams are my own ideas and may not be what Hilary had in mind at all!
Thus while The Vessel may be strictly speaking, a sacred bowl used for making offerings to the Gods, I’m suggesting it can also represent how one can go with in - meditate - and bring ideas up to the conscious mind much as a bucket/ vessel can bring water up from a well. Experiencing that this is possible shows the evolution from Vessel to Shock. It reflects the shift from recognizing we have inner resources, to actually experiencing the result of applying them. In other words, much like how a vessel that cooks can transform ordinary ingredients into something unexpectedly delicious, so hexagrams 50/51 describes how when one contributes their best efforts, the result can be surprising, a realization that changes all your previous assumptions about what is possible..

Like I imagine the 50. Vessel to be the I Ching and 51 to be the inevitable shock that comes when you consult it and - gosh darn it, how does IC know? How can this be happening? - it perfectly mirrors your situation back to you!

Funny how these tunes just pop up and seem to fit. It would do a good 16 too I reckon although I'd probably pick 'Up where we belong' by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes for 16.

I'm just pulling some thoughts together about 51.

Pulling thoughts together about 51? Good luck with that! Meanwhile check out the youtube clip, “Cowboy Herding Cats”…

Also meant to mention Star of Bethlehem is the flower essences for balancing feeling of panic and is useful with 51, particularly 51.1
Interesting how usually the first line of a hexagram describes conditions before one has fully gotten into the energy pattern but at 51. the shock comes at line one as if to say the nature of shock is to come before we expect it.

51 follows after 50 in which there has been a transformation or a radical healing. We now vibrate ( to borrow New Age parlance) at a higher level. This by it's very nature is a scary place and is going to take a bit of getting used to.

God comes forth in Zhen and completes (the work of the year) per Shuo Gua. However much you have completed in the last cycle the new cycle wipes the slate clean. You have gone up to the next level of Donkey Kong and now have to start again, albeit with a higher starting score.

51 might well be viewed as an initial period of acclimatisation. Once the fear is left behind everything is up for grabs in our brave new world. All we have to be careful of is not spilling the contents of the sacred ladle, however sure as eggs is eggs sometimes we will.

At the top of 51 we are advised to be the observer and nothing more. Through this our consciousness and awareness will grow and that will mean that only our neighbour will get caught up and shake in reacting to the fears and anxieties that beset the situation in the beginning. We need to be aware that he could if we are not careful reinfect us. However, having a strong intent and being the observer, while important is not quite enough. We have been woken up but that is only the start of the journey through the next decad to arrive at Hex 60 by which time we have gathered enough skills, awareness and tools to overcome some of the remaining restrictions and consciously 'Articulate the Crossing'.

To support us in our efforts we have 'The Star of Bethlehem' Bach Essence to help us overcome the remains of that fearsome grip of our old self. I'm sure it'll do a good job grounding us and keeping those 'mighty dreads' in abeyance. There is still going to have to be a great deal of our own personal reflection, inspection and adjusting required to become that person who can transform fear into awe.
Bach Centre: It is the remedy for the after-effects of shock, such as is caused by unexpected bad news or any unexpected and unwelcome event.

It can be used just as well for the effects of a shock received many years ago, even very early in childhood.

This is also the remedy for that sense of emptiness and loss that sometimes occurs when a loved one dies or moves away.

Back tracking a bit here….
consider that ..

46. Pushing Upward. conveys the idea of adding up small things to achieve something great. This is a fine idea but in practice it ultimately leads to a feeling of being…

47. Confined, trapped or at least burdened by EXTERNAL pressures, Yet by enduring one comes to realize that while tough times don’t last, tough people do. How? By turning to one’s INTERNAL source of wisdom, as symbolized by..

48. The Well which emphasizes the significance of maintaining a connection to one’s inner feelings for guidance. The experience of being able to go within and draw up answers from one’s inner self - just as one might draw up water from a well - rather than having to rely on outer guidance is revolutionary and leads to a…

49. Radical Change in how one views their life and the realization that personal transformation may lead to broader societal changes, or as the saying goes, “Be the change you would like to see in the world.” Let this new perspective be your contribution to…

50. The Caldron symbolizes the sacred container of all mankind’s experiences - a giant soup of insights that has been created over generations - and the knowledge gained now offered up to be shared for the benefit of all of mankind. The truth coming out can mean unexpected revelations however and thus we come to…

Hexagram 51, known as “Shock” or “Thunder”, the energy of sudden change and the awakening that comes from dealing with the unexpected. The sacred ladle, though only capable of holding a small portion of the contents of the cauldron, beautifully illustrates the profound truth that even the tiniest sample of a greater whole can encapsulate its essence. Just a single serving of soup contains the rich flavors and ingredients of the entire pot, each of our individual lives, with their unique experiences and relationships, reflects the broader tapestry of existence.

51. Shock
Shock, creating success.
Shock comes, fear and terror.
Laughing words, shrieking and yelling.
Shock spread fear for a hundred miles.
Someone does not lose the sacred ladle and libation.

“Rolling thunder: Shock.
“A noble one in fear and dread sets things in order and is watchful” (Hilary)

51. Shock

”Shock, creating success.” The term “shock” indicates a sudden unexpected event or realization that can disrupt the status quo. This could be a profound insight, an unexpected occurrence, or a wake-up call that prompts immediate attention. The implication is that Shock is not inherently negative, it can serve as a catalyst for change and growth. It challenges complacency and compels individuals to confront realities that they may have been avoiding. The phrase “creating success” suggests that from the experience of shock, positive outcomes can arise. it implies that the disturbance leads to a constructive transformation or new opportunities. The implication is that Success here is linked to the ability to adapt and respond to shock. Those who can harness the energy of the unexpected may find that it leads to breakthroughs, innovations or personal growth.

”Shock comes,” This reiterates the theme of sudden disturbance and is an indication that an unexpected event is imminent or has already occurred. It suggests that one should be prepared for the unexpected as the arrival of shock is a natural part of life.
” Fear and terror“ highlights the emotional impact that shock can have. It acknowledges that that such disruptions can elicit anxiety And serves as a reminder that these feelings are valid. Together, this line communicates that while shock can lead to opportunities for growth and success, it can also evoke fear and apprehension. The acknowledgment of fear is essential, as it reflects the reality of human emotions in response to unsettling experiences.

”Laughing words, shrieking and yelling” The line encourages an acceptance of the full range of responses, from humor to intense expression, suggesting that all sorts of reactions can coexist and play a role in coping with sudden changes. By recognizing and allowing these responses, individuals can find their way through the challenges posed by shock, ultimately fostering resilience and understanding.

”Shock spreads fear for a hundred miles.” This emphasizes that fear can transcend individual experiences and resonate within larger communities. By recognizing this interconnectedness, individuals can cultivate a sense of responsibility in how they respond to shock.

”Someone does not lose the sacred ladle and libation”
When one recognizes that while shocks are inevitable in life - “shock comes” - one can choose how to respond. “Laughing”? “Shrieking and yelling”? All responses are understandable and acceptable but when one recognizes that ones response will effect the collective energy and can spread far beyond our own awareness, one makes an effort to stay steady, keep calm, and doesn’t lose a handle on things.

”Rolling thunder: Shock.”
”A noble one in fear and trembling sets things in order and is watchful.”
Ever thought “that can’t happen here”? Well 51 is the shocking realization that anything can happen to anyone, anytime anywhere.

Bach flower Essences: Star of Bethlehem.

Biblical verses: Luke 8 - 20.

Song: ”Shout” Isley Brothers
I chose this record because Shout is the perfect partner/opposite for the hexagram coming up next: 52. Keeping Still.

We have undergone a monumental inner transformation in 50, that has shaken up our world and moved all the furniture around in 51. The turmoil; wake up call; the movements; the revelations that have all come to pass now presents everything to us in new ways. Many things are now unknown because of the nature of what we have experienced. To turn to Mr Spock from the song Star Trekkin', " It's life, Jim but not as we know it" and as such it might be easy for us to become overawed by the new realms in which we now exist. We have to take care, though, as there are still possibilities of a small number of attacks from 'Klingons on the starboard bow'. (The song is available on You Tube for anyone interested.)

The natural and nurturing (yin) thing to do, in 52, to counter the inspirational forces that have changed the face of our world (yang) in 51 is to calm everything down. On the new stage of Donkey Kong, we stay still (or process) and watch the size and frequency of the new barrels that are heading our way. We begin to observe where the gaps are that we might fall down and how and when to take our first steps. 52 is a time to check out what's occurring as we do our best to get our breath back and recuperate, especially allowing deep inner body recovery.

52 has a strong link to somatic release. Each line refers to a part of the body that is crucial for us to effectively stand, move and then negotiate our way forward as a new whole. Here we take stock 'the noble one ponders and does not issue forth from his hidden place' (Karcher). Donkey Kong on the new starting platform! Note: this is not a hiding place but more a place that is hidden deep within, and not on view to others.

52 appears to promote three things. A stilling of your new personality, so that it does not trip you up: time to frequent yourself better with the higher vibrations and, finally, to move past, without seeing or feeling, the 'old people' who had in the past, and might still again, given half a chance, hold you back (Klingons on the starboard bow?). It gives opportunity for what were habitual thoughts and behaviours to further fall by the wayside and for you to become free, or at least less entangled with the stresses, tensions, outlaws, robbers or obstacles that may still remain trapped in your body or on your inner landscape.

When there has been a shock as described in hexagram 51, the natural response is to attempt to steady oneself. This means Keeping Still, time to focus on your inner self. Maybe only for a second, as when you catch yourself about to stumble while walking, or, maybe a lifetime as when you never really recover from the shock of losing of a loved one.
Hexagram 52 elaborates on the importance of honoring this moment, giving yourself permission to totally detach, restore your balance and review what led up to this moment before taking any new action. Time to see your life objectively - Like a “Life Review” - before you can know where you are and how to 53. Progress.

My version…

52. STFU
Judgement:
Straighten your spine.
Release your ego’s self interest, you have nothing to fear. Time for an objective
Life Review. (Scan your inner world like you are wandering through your “house”)
Detach. Don’t have any personal attachments or requirements for how things must work out.
Make no mistake, this is the best way to restore balance and to prepare to proceed.

Image:
Calm down. Consider, is this the right time to get involved? Is this your circus? Are these your monkeys?
I think not.

Bach Flower essences: Aspen
Aspen is for situations that cause a person to tremble with fear like the leaves on an Aspen tree.
The ability to remain calm and keep still after a 51 shock experience is supported by this essence.

Biblical verse:
Psalm 46:10
“Be still and know that I am God.”

Song:
Breathe - Pink Floyd
The Sound of Silence. - Simon and Garfunkel

I like your take on the judgement in which the need is to still both inner and outer worlds. Perhaps it matters not whether the stilling starts form the outside and works in or the inside and works out. I also see the straightening of the back as a straightening out of the ego. During any transition a strong ego is required for safety and survival, however if the lesser aspects of the ego are not addressed then things can go wildly off track.

Whether 51 is seen as 'Shake' or 'Shock' seems to matter not a jot once we step into 52, the objectives of this hexagram work equally for either scenario.

The Aspen Tree in days of yore was seen as a tree representing heroes. The crowns of trembling leaves gave them the power to visit, and most importantly, return safely from the Underworld. Aspen crowns have been found in ancient burial mounds and are thought to allow the spirits of the deceased to return to be reborn. Traditional practical use of its wood was for making shields and is Aspen is seen as a symbol of protection.

There are records that Aspen was a tree of choice for suicide. One medicinal use was to bundle a piece of nail from each finger and nape hair of a person suffering from ague (fever and shivering) into a hole in the Aspen Tree and as time went by the ague would decrease.

One old saying imagines that the leaves of the Aspen were made from women’s tongues, which never ceased wagging and there are other beliefs . Alternatively there are other beliefs that the movement of the leaves creates a soft whistling noise which was said to be a communication with another world.

More recently the quivering leaves have been associated with various Christian myths. Aspen was the tree Judas hanged himself on and has trembled ever since or that it was the wood of the Cross (although many other woods vie for this position) and trembles in shame.

One final story is that at the time of Crucifixion of Christ all trees bowed themselves down in reverence except for Aspen who in excessive pride and arrogance refused to acknowledge Him, and stood upright. The Aspen has since then been cursed and trembles through all her leaves even when there is no wind.

Checking up at the Bach Centre they are clear that Aspen is great for fears that cannot be named or that vaguely sit on the edge of your awareness. There is so much that is unknown to us having worked our way through 50 and 51.

Hexagram 53. Gradual Progress comes from 52. Keeping Still.
The idea is that when one has come completely still and throughly contemplated a situation then one can see the best way to proceed. So the importance of thinking before acting. I think of the expressions “Measure twice, cut once.” and ”Don’t fly off the handle” like an axe blade that wasn’t secured to the handle might.

Hexagram 53. Gradual Progress - True growth is not rushed. It unfolds over time. Getting this hexagram is a reminder that it’s the results of sustained effort and patience that lead to lasting achievements. It encourages us to trust the process and remain committed to the goal.

Judgement:
“Gradual Progress. The woman marries.” Growth and development take time. Through steady efforts relationships can evolve into deeper commitments. Although the lines of 53. use the example of a romantic relationship, the advice can apply not just to marriages, but to any collaboration where trust and commitment are essential.”
“:Good fortune.” - Encouragement to continue. Signifies that efforts made in nurturing relationships or projects will be rewarded.
“Constancy bears fruit.” Encouragement to remain dedicated to one’s goals, knowing that consistency will lead to positive results in the long run.

Image:
“On the mountain is a tree: Gradual Progress.”
“The noble one abides in virtuous character and improves the ordinary. (Hilary)”
Try to leave things better than you found them.

Bach Flower Essences:
Clematis Is for keeping one grounded and being in the present rather than daydreaming or drifting off thinking about the future, and not taking care of the small daily chores. It particularly speaks to line three where one needs to balance introspection and outer world responsibilities.

Biblical verse:
Zechariah 4:10. Do not despise a day of small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.

Song lyric: “I do believe it’s getting better. It’s getting better all the time.’ Beatles

Hex 53 tests further our connection to the stillness inside that was established in 52. It asks the question "How committed or resolved are you at remaining in the shoes of the superior one and leading a life of virtue? ". Improvements are not going to just be handed to us on a plate, they have to be worked for. This hexagram certainly is not a story of plain sailing.

While the path may be two steps forward and one step back as difficulties arise we now have at least an awareness of the tools that we can rely on to address any difficulties encountered. We are more easily able to see things in the light of a long term plan or a long term goal. We are better equipped now to respond rather than react.

The flight of stairs we climb for 53 may look something like this

53.1 - Household (37): we start from a strong, stable place
53.2 - Proceeding Humbly (57): we feel nurtured, resilient and quietly confident.
53.3 - Watching (20): we see new unfamiliar patterns beginning to play out. our resolve and resources slowly become tested.
53.4 - Retreat (33): in some situations we feel like a fish out of water and take a step back.
53.5 - Keeping Still (52): somewhat rattled we revisit our safe place to receive again revitalising deep nourishment.
53.6 - Hardship (39): our progress may be being checked for the moment however our re-energised understanding of the benefits of the deep nourishment received from Keeping Still hold us in very good stead for what we face or what is to come.

Take it away Ian.......

Clematis Lore

The Clematis is known as the Devil’s Thread; based in the word dvale, which is Danish, meaning a deadly trance. Some saw it as involved in doing the devil's work as it would kill other plants by out-competing them. Its deepest meaning is artifice.

Varieties of clematis have variously been called Travellers’ Joy (for adorning hedges when people travel); Old Man’s Beard (from the hoary appearance of its seeds); and Virgin’s Bower (as a compliment to Queen Elizabeth and referring to it’s climbing habits).

Virgin’s Bower became the emblem of Artifice because beggars, in order to invoke compassion, made false ulcers in their flesh by means of its twigs, the result often being a real sore because the plant is acrid and inflames the skin.

An old myth of Little Russia tells a story of tormented Cossack souls, buried against their will with their Tartar enemies, that would be brought back from the dead by everybody suspending Briony from the back their waistbelt.

In stark contrast, Clematis flowers have long been associated with the qualities of mental beauty and ingenuity. Metaphysically, Clematis creates solid ground to walk on for all those who hear the call of the beyond.

One old saying about clematis growth is, “The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap.” Growth may seem slow as the plant builds its root system, but once established, clematis are strong growers. An embodiment of Gradual Progress it seems!

“Clematis creates solid ground to walk on” Wow, that so fits with the idea that progress needs the solid moral support that
52. Keeping Still represented to provide the stability out of which 53. Gradual Progress can emerge!

Sometimes the progress can be so slow and make a person forgetful Clematis helps keep a person alert and focused.
I think of Rumi’s words, ”The wind at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.”

Also I appreciate your insight that at this point the IC is starting to talk about long term plans and goals. 53 gives an example of mini progress - note how lines 1-3 describe a relationship that has a tragic end, but then in the next relationship, 4-6, things are much improved. Then - after being fortified with this encouragement that as one experience follows our ability to navigate does get better - we move on to 54. The Marrying Maiden which lays out the whole long road map of how with experience, things evolve and do eventually improve.
The response to getting 54 is often one of frustration as it seems to mean one is stuck on a road with no turn offs and no short cuts. Everything must move forward in this preordained order. You can’t fast forward past winter to get from Summer to next year’s Spring!

On to 54 soon but I forgot to take my Clematis so now first a little nap…

For 53 to manifest, the excess twisted qualities of the masculine in residence ( maybe even a residue from before 50?) must first make way on our inner landscape (1-3) before the feminine can follow and together they make improvements. It's worth remembering that 'Gradual Progress' may not even manifest in the outer world to begin with. Those new roots have to grow!

I'm playing with the idea of rather 54 being something to become frustrated about or fear, because it is linked to the dark feminine and something beyond our control, but rather that 54 represents our relationship to the transitory nature of life: change just happens and just how do we deal with that.

Wilhelm
Thus the superior man
Understands the transitory
In the light of the eternity of the end.

Off to don my pondering jacket and hat.

Now I’m thinking about 54 as having something to do with protocol and how one can’t jump ahead and one mustn’t go numb on our way to achieving mastery but must experience the path, be mindful, every step of the way. The good news is when one recognizes these tests and trials are not fatal to our spirit we can more comfortably flow with them. As your quote from Wilhelm suggests, it doesn’t matter how many lifetimes this takes, the key lesson we learn from these trials is we that we always survive, our souls are eternal.

My first ponder was that as 52 speaks to progressing things gradually, accepting and dissolving or overcoming in some way, the obstacles, pressures, stresses etc that arrive in and and around you, perhaps 53 is more aligned with not being able to accept what is thrust in front of you by life. Here rather than being taught by slow and steady, experiencing / encountering haste and imbalance are the order of the day in this hexagram. Learning from characteristics resident on the flip side of the coin.

I remember Cleary, in one of his books, named 53 as ' Making the young girl marry' rather than 'Marrying Maiden' as is perhaps more common. Including 'making' adds a forceful or pressurised tone to proceedings and I was never quite sure what to do with that perspective.

Perhaps that old adage "Marry in haste, repent in leisure' may throw some light on the discussion. ( I'm pondering on the hoof here, so I'm happy for any of this material to be explored with other perspectives)

Now, although not fully clear for me, 'forcing' any situation will not be beneficial, either emotionally or in exposing the true crux of the matter. What presents itself in life to us is only ever transitory. Yet if we emotionally invest in it, to too large an extent, then we can become consumed by it (marrying it?). That offers little or no chance of it ( a negative life situation of feeling) sliding past us in it's own good time rather than hitting us square between the eyes.

The state of relationship that we have with our emotions or feelings, I think might be what 53 is alluding to. A healthy relationship and we can more easily weather a storm. An unhealthy relationship and we get sucked into the unexpected drama when we are presented with events that occur in ways that are outside of our control.

We start as a lame man at 53.1 and the lines don't really depict a picture of any great progress after that. So maybe there is a life lesson here of learning to adapt to the transitory so that we become better equipped to survive difficult or surprising life experience.

54. The Marrying Maiden

The marrying maiden. To set out to bring order: pitfall.
No direction is fruitful. (Hilary)

“No direction home. Like a complete unknown.” (Bob Dylon)
As a person in a submissive position any attempt to intentionally promote your own agenda (or dictate what direction to take) wont get you anywhere. Suggests one ought to submit to reality and go with the flow.

Above the Lake there is Thunder: the Marrying Maiden.
A noble one through ever flowing endings
Knows what wears out. (Hilary)

The inner feelings, vibrations, Lake, respond to the vibrations, feelings, coming from the outer world, Thunder.
I think of Lake as the experienced woman, who, after having gone through multiple lifetimes dealing with Thunderous men
knows eventually passion fades. A “Keep calm and carry on” line.

Also..
Just as Thunder can make ripples appear on the top of a Lake without stirring the water in the depths, the Marrying Maiden handles external pressures by being flexible on the surface like rippling waves while maintaining calm and persevering deep within.

Bach flower essence: Chicory.
For emotional balance and growth.
The Marrying Maiden may long too much for the security of having a partner and be tempted to settle for security over self-sufficiency and freedom (54.3). Chicory can help balance the need for feeling seen and appreciated - loved - with the soul’s mission to move independently.

Biblical verse: Ephesians 5:21-33.
”Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ…”
Speaks of rather than a wife submitting to her husband, the two ought to submit to each other as equals and thus bring in the higher consciousness.

Song:
54 describes a situation where one has hopes but no power. The future is uncertain and one must simply go with the flow.
Beatles “Something” seems appropriate:
Something in the way she moves attracts me like no other lover. something in the way she woos me. I don’t want to leave her now. You know I believe and how. You’re asking me will my love grow? I don’t know. I don’t know. Stick around now it may show. I don’t know, I don’t know. Something in the way she knows and all I have to do is think of her. Something in the things she shows me. I don’t want to leave her now. You know I believe and how.

Thanks for continuing the conversation. Interesting you find not sleeping facilitates finding your true self. The Muslim faith celebrates Ramadan each year by fasting during the day and staying awake all night as a way of coming to greater awareness.

I think hexagram 17 describes man going through his day and then going to bed at night which leads to 18. I see 18. Repairing What Has Been Spoiled as then referencing the sorting out the confusion of the day and the healing power of sleep. Anyway, interesting your experiences with sleeping and not sleeping. I wonder what would happen if you were to take Walnut with the thought of exploring your sleep cycle..?

On another thread we have been discussing 61. Inner Truth as advice for how to get better at understanding the oracle. The flower essence for 61 is Cerato, which strengthens awareness of intuition. I’ll get to 61 eventually in this thread here but it’s going to be awhile at the rate I’m going so I thought it might be useful to mention the essence for enhancing awareness of Inner Truth now ahead of time.
What is Cerato?

Hi Rosada, I never saw this on the Bach Flowers until tonight. I am a certified Bach Flower practionner - - I went to the Bach Fondation in England years ago and took all the levels to be able to use the Flowers with clients. I find them absolutely fascinating, and magical. Did not know you were familiar with them as well. I had a man in the south of France make all my flowers in the tradition Bach - not even sure he is still alive. Gave them to my children through all of their different challenges -- I love the way you attached them to the hexagrams - what an undertaking -- I am going to note your choices next to the hexagrams -- thanks very much. Hope all well with you, all the best, Emily
