Podcast - Entertaining synchronicity

A reminder that readings, and the synchronicities that surround them, can simply be fun. Here’s a reading, about making both an income and a difference, that certainly is: Hexagram 58, Opening, changing at line 2 to 17, Following:

changing to
‘Lakes joined together. Opening.
A noble one joins with friends to speak and practise together.’

Podcast - Living Change I Ching podcast

Here it is... I Ching podcast, episode 1. In future I'd like to add more sections to this - some interviews, feedback, shared experiences, maybe even some music like a real, grown-up podcast. Some of the more in-depth stuff will be for Change Circle members only, but there'll always be a free part, too. At the moment, after all the planning, divining, thinking and recording and editing and geekery, it seems quite odd that the result is less than 15 minutes long. Still - it makes sense to start small and grow rather than starting huge and dwindling away, doesn't it? Also, Yi was helpful enough to give me an unchanging hexagram for my first 'living change' reading:
Question: Yi, what do we need to know about holding a living connection to source and meaning?
Answer... ...well, what single hexagram would you imagine might answer that one?
Hexagram 29, the Repeating Chasms, unchanging.
It wasn't in the least what I expected, but the more time I spend with the reading the more it moves me. (You know how that works.) Have a listen; let me know what you think. Thoughts about the reading, suggestions for future questions and content... all welcome.

Podcast - Shock, bogs, and not knowing

The first thing you’re going to notice about this episode is the change of music. The new recording is Kimiko Ishizaka’s performance of the 9th of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, from her wonderful Open Goldberg Variations project. I hope you enjoy it!

Three readings of mine get a mention in this podcast:

Guidance for the week at Grittleton: Hexagram 51, Shock, changing at lines 1 and 4 to 2, Earth.

changing to

How to cope with the bog of 51.4? 4 unchanging – Not Knowing

And advice for the next phase – Hexagram 1, Creative Force, changing at 1, 3, 4 and 5 to 4 again:

changing to

I’ll explain them all in the episode!

Links I mentioned…

And not least,

(The photo for this post is of my ‘cello with a few of his friends and relations in the corridor at Grittleton.)

Podcast - Open to the new?

In this episode, Maggie and I dive into her reading about a possible new job: Hexagram 16, Enthusiasm, changing at lines 3 and 5 to 31, Influence.

changing to

It’s not only about being ‘open to the new’, I think – also about being prepared and actively engaged with the process. Installing the feudal lords, embracing the marriage, writing the music to sing…

In the introduction I mention a similarity with episode 68, and at the end I talk about the Change Patterns course you can access inside Change Circle. (If you’re already a member, you’ll find it in the ‘Enrich your understanding section’ in the new Learning Guide.)

Podcast - Stilling her Travelling

An exquisitely clear, simple reading for this month’s podcast: advice for someone who has just moved to a new town – Hexagram 52, Stilling, and 56, Travelling:

There’s not much to add to that, is there?

Podcast - Tortoise magic

A Clarity member’s reading, about a sphere of light and a magic tortoise. Here’s her original post about her experience. And for completeness, here’s a podcast from last year with the exact same reading, Hexagram 27 changing at line 1 to 23:

Podcast - First reading

Question: ‘What do I need to focus on now so that I can be living my best life in my third age?’

Answer: Hexagram 23, Stripping Away, changing at lines 1,2,3,4 and 6 to 34, Great Vigour.

changing to

With her very first question to the Yi, Parmjit asked for focus, and received five moving lines; she was looking for direction, and her reading started with Hexagram 23 (‘no direction bears fruit’!). But it’s still the beginning of a beautiful friendship…

Podcast - An inner landscape

Here's Yi doing something I'd never seen before: echoing and resonating with a Sanskrit mantra. Sana dreamt the Gayatri mantra; when she woke, she asked Yi for a picture of her inner landscape, and cast Hexagram 35, Advancing - - without changing lines. No decisions to be made or problems to be solved in this reading - just a gift to receive.

Podcast - Ways of Nourishing

A reading for a decision this time: Sha asked,

“If I build another tech company, what will the experience be like?”

Yi answered with Hexagram 27, Nourishing, changing at lines 2 and 3 to 26, Great Tending:

changing to

So that gave her an interesting couple of moving lines:

‘Unbalanced nourishment.
Rejecting the standard, looking to the hill-top for nourishment.
Setting out to bring order – pitfall.’

‘Rejecting nourishment.
Constancy, pitfall.
For ten years, don’t act.
No direction bears fruit.’

It looks as though the experience would be not much fun at all – but why…?

Podcast - Coping with a gloomy reading

Bill asked about his dating prospects, and received – of all things – the sixth line of Hexagram 24, Returning…

changing to

…which is exactly no-one’s favourite line. So how do you respond when Yi’s answer is all doom and gloom, and really not what you hoped to hear? You explore… so we did.

Bill kindly interviewed me for his blog afterwards: here’s his article.

Podcast - What kind of change is menopause?

That’s something I asked Yi recently, and it answered with Hexagram 23, Stripping Away, changing at lines 1 and 6 to 24, Returning –

Podcast - Yi’s companionship

Brian asked,

“Why am I compelled to leave my job and join Greenpeace?”

and Yi responded with Hexagram 18, ‘Work on what has been spoiled’ in the Wilhelm/Baynes translation he was consulting.

This was in 1982: we’re revisiting the reading and learning from it, 43 years on.

Things we mention…

The ‘entangled pair’ – both inverse and complementary – of hexagrams 17 and 18:

paired with

And the nuclear story of Hexagram 18, passing through hexagrams 28, 54 and 27, which you can build from all its component trigrams:

Podcast - Where next?

In this episode, Natalia is asking a wide-open question: where is she to go next? And Yi’s answer combines focus with openness: Hexagram 7, the Army, changing at line 2 to Hexagram 2, Earth:

changing to

(You may notice something different at the beginning and end of this episode. The music is the same – the Allemande from Bach’s first suite for ‘cello – but since there’s some ambiguity about the public domain status of the recording I’ve been using in previous episodes, I’ve switched to a lovely, eloquent performance by Colin Carr, published by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and available here in full under this Creative Commons licence.)

Podcast - In the Jaws

Charlie asked ‘How to navigate?’ and cast Hexagram 27, Nourishment – or Jaws – changing at line 1 to 23, Stripping Away:

changing to

What followed was a strongly resonant conversation between his inner imagery and the imagery of the Yi – and also the ancient Chinese motif of being in the jaws of the tiger. The featured image above this post shows a detail from the handle of the Houmuwu vessel, where you can just see the human face between the tigers’ open mouths. (The original photo is by Mlogic, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0, via Wikimedia Commons.)

Here’s another example, from the 11th century BC:

11th century BC bronze that represents a tiger eating a man. It was suggested that those animals helped the shamans to communicate with the royal ancestors and spirits. This bronze is in the Musée Cernuschi in Paris

Podcast - A marriage dispersing

How does the Yi help in an impossibly painful situation? It’s hard to describe – deep recognition, being recognised, a sense of reconnection. Dominique’s reading for this episode:

“What is the lesson that I must learn through the pain of losing my marriage and our future?”

And Yi’s answer: Dispersing – Hexagram 59, with no changing lines.

It’s a beautiful response – I hope you enjoy listening.

Podcast - Creating a home

This podcast has a reading of my own, about creating a home. Yi answered with Hexagram 53, Gradual Progress, changing at line 5 to Hexagram 52, Stilling: changing to If you'd like to discuss a reading with me for a future episode (it's free, as a 'thank you' for sharing), please book here! In this one, I spend some time discussing the 'nuclear story' of the moving lines - how you can find four component trigrams in a hexagram, and the hexagrams they create. Here they are (because this is a lot easier to follow when you can see it): I cast this hexagram - and by taking groups of consecutive lines, you can find four trigrams inside it: - lines 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5 and 4-5-6. So extract each of those trigrams, with the moving line included... …and combine them into hexagrams. Each hexagram's made from two overlapping trigrams: 39, Limping 64, Not Yet Crossing 37, People in the Home And there you have the three nuclear hexagrams I talk about in the episode.
