Hexagram 30 is Clarity – the moment of insight and the capacity for it – and one of its key attributes is ‘holding together’. This has to do with the capacity of mind and heart to hold to truth, and also with the way in which living things hold to one another. Truly perceiving another person and their need, being present to it rather than squirming away, is itself a kind of holding and support.
So real clarity, in human experience, is never far from compassion. And naturally it touches it most closely when there is Clarity on Harmony among People – when Hexagram 30 changes at the fifth place and is drawn towards Hexagram 13:
‘Weeping tears like flowing streams,
Sad as if in mourning.
Good fortune.’
Why would weeping and mourning mean good fortune?
“Hearts united in pain and sorrow will not be separated by joy and happiness. Bonds that are woven in sadness are stronger that the tides of joy and pleasure. Love that is washed by tears will remain eternally pure and beautiful.”
Kahlil Gibran (from Love Letters in the Sand)
