The week before last, I was itching to get started on something, and Yi told me to ‘strip away’ and to have no direction to go. And I realised that I could go anywhere.
Then last week, with far more ideas and possibilities in mind than I’d dreamt possible, Yi told me to contain myself and keep still. And I found I had the opportunity to go much more deeply into what comes next.
This week – finally! – I received Hexagram 46, Pushing Upward, with no changing lines. Time to get this show on the road! So based on my thoughts so far, and on some specific advice from Yi about my favourite idea, I started a thread at the I Ching Community. (Feel free to go read through it and comment – though please bear in mind that the initial idea has changed a lot and is still changing…) This would be my first step forward in the step-by-step approach that 46 suggests.
Meanwhile a wise friend, helping me out with the reading, suggested that I would be pushing upward from strong roots, but that it might not be so clear what I was moving towards. And oh, was he ever right! I find myself pushing upward into a much bigger space, with far more possibilities and much more daunting challenges than I ever expected or intended.
This ties in with something I’ve noticed before – that when you have an unchanging hexagram, the nuclear hexagram can emerge very strongly. The hidden core of Pushing Upward is being like the Marrying Maiden – moving upward and outward into a whole new world where the possibilites are much greater than ever before, but you really don’t feel ready for it all.
So here I am. If you have comments on what you really like about this website, or what you would change about it if you could, now would be a good time to post a comment!
I saw a beautiful picture of 46 yesterday, though, when we walked through the nearby wood – shining with bright spring green and great clouds of bluebells.
the path of 46, the ‘correct order’ through the hexagram is described by analogy to:
011000 (46 entangling)
101010 (63 – completion, correct sequence)
——— XOR
110010 60 – standardising (imposing limits to ensure common themes)
This suggests that the way through 46 and so on getting more entangled with another/others is done through standardising and so avoiding ideosyncratic relationships; we get entangled but not too much (as compared to the ‘opposite’ or exaggeration of 46 WITHIN the Wind Octet – 44 – where the octet orders is 46, 18, 48, 32, 57, 50, 28, 44 and so local ‘opposites’ relationships of 46-44, 18-28, 32-50, 48-32. This is due to the self-referencing of yin/yang manifest in the binary sequence where within each octet is reflection of the whole sequence)
46 shares space with 18 where the issue in 18 is on perpetual correction to aid in avoiding corruption in the form of (a) neglect or (b) criminal. The generic relational theme is to ‘keep talking’ to ensure there are no misunderstandings that can make things go off the rails later.
For 18 the ‘correct path’ is:
011001 18
101010 63
——— XOR
110011 61 – here the focus is on the use of empathy to elicit resonance and so allow one to detect ‘anomolies’ through resonance of insincerity etc. The act of correcting can be a ‘hard exterior’ but with a need to resonant with the ‘true’ purpose and so correct things when they move away from that purpose.
46 gets its nourishment from a source described by analogy to:
011000 (46)
011010 (48 source of nourishment, foundation setting)
——— XOR
000010 08
08 is passive but reflects a sense of unconditional attraction, people come to the court/king not the king to them. Thus the sense of entangement of 46 reflects this attraction, to be proactive in getting more involved.
I also read a double deck of divination. Would you like to trade?

Hi Elo!
Not right now, thanks – life is too full. But thank you for the offer – I’ll remember it for later. What’s a ‘double deck of divination’?
