Just found another online I Ching translation. I haven’t looked at it in any detail, but it seems quite plain and straightforward. The unusual part is that the junzi has become the exceptional human, and personal pronouns have all turned into ‘hu’.
I Ching The Book of Changes – 2
The irony is that where most of these ugly depersonalised personal pronouns have been inserted, the original Chinese doesn’t have any. For instance, instead of the ludicrous ‘hu draws hus bow’ in 38/6 it would have been quite straightforward and more accurate to have ‘draws bow’. And a junzi was male, of course.
Unfortunately this translation was very recently taken offline.
That was quick – it was there when I blogged it. But no great loss.
I wish I’d gone with my hunch to save the two html-files it was on, though. It sometimes helped me take a different angle towards translating a line.
