59. Huan / Dispersion [Dissolution]

-----
----- above SUN THE GENTLE, WIND
-- --
-- --
----- below K'AN THE ABYSMAL, WATER
-- --

Wind blowing over water disperses it, dissolving it into foam and mist. This suggests that when a man's vital energy is dammed up within him (indicated as a danger by the attribute of the lower trigram), gentleness serves to breakup and dissolve the blockage.

The ruler of the hexagram is the nine in the fifth place, because only a person occupying an honored place can bring order into world-wide dispersion. However, the nine in the second place is within, in order to strengthen the foundations, and the six in the fourth place is in the relationship of receiving to the nine in the fifth place, in order to complete the work of the latter. Consequently these two lines also have important functions within the hexagram. Thus is why it is said in the commentary on the Decision: " The firm comes and does not exhaust itself. the yielding receives a place without, and the one above is in harmony with it."

The Sequence
After joy comes dispersal. Hence there follows the hexagram of DISPERSION. Dispersion means scattering.

Miscellaneous Notes
DISPERSION means scattering.

Appended Judgements
They scooped out tree trunks for boats and they hardened wood in the fire to make oars. the advantage of boats and oars lay in providing means of communication. They probably took this from the hexagram of DISPERSION.

This hexagram has a double meaning. The first is suggested by the image of wind over water, indicating the breaking up of ice and rigidity. The second meaning is penetration: Sun penetrates into K'an, the Abysmal, indicating dispersion, division. As against this process of breaking up, the task of reuniting presents itself; this meaning also is contained in the hexagram.

The image of wood over water gives rise to the idea of a boat.

Thanks much, Luis. No effects or color enhancements were used in either of the photos, nor were they intentionally taken to be used for 59, nor to match one another. It's interesting to me because LiSe's is so much yin/lake while mine is so much yang/mountain, but yet they both are captured in a 59 moment.

That's a very interesting process with beautiful results, pictorialist. Hard to tell some from actual paintings.

I had always thought of the water below being stirred up by the winds. These pictures give a much more gentle vision and suggest how it could be possible for a misunderstanding to dissolve without a trace.

The practical message I get from 59 is, lighten up.

59's images of sacrifices, offerings and building temples to honor the watchful past is an interesting one to contemplate. Why temples? Why honor the past or the ancestors? I think it's to put us in the now; the now that we never seem to have time for. Until we stop the constant internal mental machine, it will be everywhere but right here. Building a temple to honor what already is. All the rest just dissipates.

It's very hard to undo myself, but if I create something greater than myself, then undoing myself isn't hard anymore. I can submit to and relax in the temple. What a relief that is from carrying the world around on my shoulders.

Meng seems to have hit the nail on the head.

Until we stop the constant internal mental machine, it will be everywhere but right here. Building a temple to honor what already is. All the rest just dissipates.

This hexagram after the home coming and the sometimes painful steps up the joyful ladder is for me like a rebirth. It's a giving up of the old way we were. it's letting go of all of our old blockages and barriers and being blown /floating dream-like through the mists, paying attention to what we need to be in the now and not listening to the old tapes of the past or the what if's of the future. We merge into the mist and come out the other side refreshed and renewed.

All the feelings of shame, guilt, fear, hate, jealousy etc can melt away on the wind. All the reasons for why not, should not, can not, what if, if only can be washed clean as we give up our resistance to old ways of thinking and worn out belief systems.

May be of interest..
The Maya of Eternal Time on Youtube.
All about 2012 and what may happen. He tells of the time of Atlantis and all the people building ships to DISPERSE around the world and now coming together again at ancient TEMPLES to preform ceremony to reunite the inner heart of man with the heart, vibration, of mother earth. By having this inner connection each can survive the coming pole shift which will not necessarily be on 12/21/2012 but could come anytime between now and 2015.

Minds that are moving from "made up" into incoherence, minds that are coming undone and dissolving into the void or white light, do in fact illustrate one of the many aspects or facets of Huan.
Still, for me, one of the scariest omens of all is that people are actually paying attention to this drivel.

THE JUDGEMENT

DISPERSION. Success.
The king approaches his temple.
It furthers one to cross the great water.
Perseverance furthers.

The text of this hexagram resembles that of Ts'ui GATHERING TOGETHER (45). In the latter, the subject is the bringing together of elements that have been separated, as water collects in lakes upon the earth. Here the subject is the dispersing and dissolving of divisive egotism. DISPERSION shows the way, so to speak, that leads to gathering together. This explains the similarity of the two texts.

Religious forces are needed to overcome the egotism that divides men. The common celebration of the great sacrificial feasts and sacred rites, which gave expression simultaneously to the interrelation and social articulation of family and state, was the means employed by the great rulers to unite men. The sacred music and the splendor of the ceremonies aroused a strong tide of emotion that was shared by all hearts in unison, and that awakened a consciousness of the common origin of all creatures. In this way disunity was overcome and rigidity dissolved. A further means to the same end is co-operation in great general undertakings that set a high goal for the will of the people; in the common concentration on this goal, all barriers dissolve, just as, when a boat is crossing a great stream, all hands must unite in a joint task.
But only when a man who is himself free of all selfish ulterior considerations, and who perseveres in justice and steadfastness, is capable of so dissolving the hardness of egotism.

Hi, Mike:

I like very much all what you say.

For the question, I believe that H.59 is speaking of SEED SCATTERING, that is maybe compliant to the following points you comment.

Character huan4 is said to mean TO CHANGE (1) or also TO DISPERSE, but maybe a bit of RIDDLE METHOD applied to character analisis could be interesant.

huan4 has the component WATER at the left side, maybe meaning a river.

At the right side there are three component piled one over another, from bottom to top:
→ first: BIG / GREAT,
→ second: TO ENTER
→ third: a PERSON

Reading the riddle:

AT THE LEFT SIDE, A RIVER
at the left side of a river
say the holy side, improper for normal living,
reserved for ritual uses

FROM BOTTOM TO TOP: BIG/GREAT, ENTERING, PERSON
Something great is entering into a person
from bottom to top.

Maybe MYSTIC POSSESSION, somebody like a GREAT MAN (daren), a SHAMAN or a DIVINER, somebody that manages THE CHANGE, somebody preparing himself for a RITE.

Or maybe YOUNG PEOPLE enjoying SPRING RITUAL, before wich they OUGHT TO CROSS THE RIVER. Say SCATTERING THE SEED WITHOUT ANY SHAME.

... both compliant with H.54 general sense:

CHANGE FEAST - EXCHANGE FEAST - SCATERING FEAST
The ritual where somebody change his personal identity, passage, intiation.

KINGS are SUPPOSED TO HAVE TEMPLES
If kings have temples for private and public rites
for the joy of his ancestors, why not ...

PROFITABLE TO CROSS the BIG STREAM
... to cross the big river that, although dangerous, has its rewards,
and assures the ancestor's life continuity.

PROFITABLE OMEN.
all be for good.

All the best,

Charly :bows:

(1) Schuessler gives as early meanings TO CHANGE / EXCHANGE, to SCATTER was maybe a later more poetic form of naming the same thing, following the metaphor of STORM vanishing, ending RAIN and scattering CLOUDS.

That depends on what our question is about. Shame, guilt fear etc can melt away with 59 but so can bonds of friendship and connection.

In 59 form, boundaries and definitions dissolve, in hex 60 they form. I think 59 can be not especially good news for connections you want to hold on to, they dissipate and you won't know where you are. However 59 is very good for questions about rows as generally you find you can't recall what the row was about in the first place

Lower states into higher states, solids into liquids, liquids into gasses. These are endothermic processes - they absorb energy, or take the heat away. Huan isn't a release of pent up energy because it takes energy to move up to a higher state. It's an investment, like a flower is a sacrifice to make seed. But the movement is into a larger world, specific into general, narrow into wide, parochial into cosmopolitan, stuck into liberated, mortality into that which survives us. It's often scary, because it's a big leap, hence the clinging described in some of the lines.
There are lots of similarities and differences between this and Hexagram 40. In 40 the loosening takes less energy because you are allowing things to return to the way they want to be. In 59 you might make an effort to become a generally better and more forgiving person, while in 40 you simply let go of specific resentments.

I had just today a reading regarding an experience I had lately. I got 59>45. I had an image in my mind the solid water becomes air/gas and a feeling that the borders of the world become wider, the world expands. I had not the time to look at my reading but Brad, what you say makes sense, in an intuitive way .

Commentary on the Decision

"Dispersion. Success." The firm comes and does not exhaust itself. The yielding receives a place without, and the one above is in harmony with it."

"The king approaches his temple." The king is in the middle.

"It furthers one to cross the great water." To rely on wood is productive of merit.

"Comes" refers to position within the inner, i.e., lower trigram, while "goes" refers to position in the outer, i.e., upper trigram. The firm element that comes is therefore the nine in the second place. Occupying the middle place in the lower trigram, it creates for the light principle placed in the midst of dark lines a basis of activity as inexhaustible as water (K'an).
The yielding line that receives a place without and acts in harmony with the one above is the six in the fourth place, the minister. The action connoted by the hexagram is based upon the reciprocal relationships between the three lines in the fifth, the fourth , and the second place.
The king in the middle is the nine in the fifth place. His central position denotes the inner concentration that enables him to hold together the elements striving to break asunder.
The temple is suggested by the upper nuclear trigram Ken, mountain, house. The idea of crossing the great water derives from Sun (wood) and K'an (water).

Hi, Rosada:

In uppercase W/B:

渙 huan4: change / exchange / passage / disperse / scatter / DISPERSION
亨 heng1: sacrifice / feast / prosperous / SUCCESS

王 wang2: king / The KING
假 jia3: hypotetical / fake / false / to borrow / if / suppose / APPROACHES
有 you3 / to have / there is / there are / to exist / to be / HIS
廟 miao4 / temple / monastery / TEMPLE

利 li4 / advantage / benefit / profit / sharp / I FURTHERS one
涉 she4: to wade / to cross / to ford / to CROSS
大 da4: big / major / great / the GREAT
川 chuan1: river / creek / WATER

利 li4 / advantage / benefit / profit / sharp / FURTHERS
貞 zhen1: divination / omen / perseverance / chaste / PERSEVERANCE

You can see that the word jia3 (1) (2) makes some noise: following Schuessler we can understand:
  • that the King is BORROWING his temple, it doesn't belong to him.
  • that the King is COMING to his temple, which makes little sense in the whole statement, but is the option preferred by W/B

This character without the MAN radical means false, borrowed, with ANIMAL radical (and a differente tone) means MALE PIG, say the King as a pig but manly.

I believe that makes better sense such alternatives like:
  • The King SUPPOSEDLY have his TEMPLE
  • Even FAKE KINGS have their TEMPLES
  • KINGS have BORROWED even their TEMPLES

→ You that maybe are not a King, go, cross the river and do your sacrifice, fullfill your own ancestors' expectations.

Don't you believe so?

Yours,

Charly

# If.
# Large.
# Good, great, excellent.

In magic rituals isn't there something about crossing over water? Like crossing over water some how disconnects you from the previous influence?

THE IMAGE

The wind drives over the water:
The image of DISPERSION.
Thus the kings of old sacrificed to the Lord
And built temples.

In the autumn and winter, water begins to freeze into ice. When the warm breezes of spring come, the rigidity is dissolved, and the elements that have been dispersed in ice floes are reunited, It is the same with the minds of the people. Through hardness and selfishness the heart grows rigid, and this rigidity leads to separation from all others. Egotism and cupidity [greed] isolate men. Therefore the hearts of men must be seized by a devote emotion. They must be shaken by a religious awe in the face of eternity - stirred with an intuition of the One Creator of all living beings, and united through the strong feeling of fellowship experienced in the ritual of divine worship.
