40. Hsieh / Deliverance

-- --
-- -- above CHIEN THE AROUSING, THUNDER
-----
-- --
----- below K'AN THE ABYSMAL, WATER
-- --

Here the movement goes out of the sphere of danger. The obstacle has been removed, the difficulties are being resolved.
Deliverance is not yet achieved; it is just at the beginning, and the hexagram represents the various stages.

The rulers of the hexagram are the nine in the second and the sixth in the fifth place.
Therefore it is said in the Commentary on the Decision, "By going he wins the multitude," this referring to the fifth place, and further, "He wins the central position," this referring to the second place.

THE SEQUENCE
Things cannot be permanently amid obstructions.
Hence there follows the hexagram of DELIVERANCE.
Deliverance means release from tension.

Miscellaneous Notes
DELIVERANCE means release from tension.

Hex 40 overall...

Gia-Fu Feng translated hex 40 judgment by:

RELIEF. WEST AND SOUTH FRUITFUL. IF NO NEED TO ACT, TURN AROUND. LUCK. IF NEED TO ACT, HASTEN. LUCK. Relief, you act because of danger. By action you escape from danger; this is relief. Relief in the west and south fruitful because there you have the support of the multitude. Return and have luck because you are in the Tao. If necessary to act, hasten. Luck to prevent further suffering. Heaven and Earth are relieved when we have thunder and rain. With thunder and rain, 100 fruits, plants and trees burst and sprout. Great indeed is the timing of relief.

Image: Thunder and rain break loose. Relief. The master forgives errors and pardons crimes.

My Explanation of the King Wen Sequence yields:

The completing 10th hexagram of the set of human potential or romantic tension. This is the final quiescent state of stable peace. In terms of romance this is the Release of personal tension or the Re-leasing of fundamental commitments. In terms of the trigrams, thunder over flowing water. In Chinese thought, thunder is energy that arises from the earth and shakes loose rain from the clouds, here the thunder has passed on by and the rain is falling on the fields, the release of cosmic energy and the renewing of the commitments of heaven to bring rain to grow crops. In terms of human events, this set which begins with the romance of courtship ends with the regular sexual activity of established married couples.

The idea of release and deliverance is expressed in the fact the trigram Chen, movement, stands above (without) and moves away from the lower (inner) trigram K'an, danger. In one aspect, this hexagram is a further development of the situation described in Chun, DIFFICULTY AT THE BEGINNING (3): in the latter, there is movement within danger, here movement begins deliverance from danger. In another aspect, this hexagram is the inverse of the preceding one. The obstruction is removed, deliverance has come.
In terms of the Image, thunder - electricity - has penetrated the rain clouds. There is the release from tension. The thunderstorm breaks, and the whole of nature breathes freely again.

THE JUDGEMENT

DELIVERANCE. The southwest furthers.
If there is no longer anything where one has to go,
Return brings good fortune.
If there is still something where one has to go,
Hastening brings good fortune.

DELIVERANCE.

This refers to a time in which tensions and complications begin to be eased.

At such times we ought to make our way back to ordinary conditions as soon as possible;
this is the meaning of "the southwest."

These periods of sudden change have great importance.

Just as rain relieves atmospheric tension, making all the buds burst open, so a time of deliverance from burdensome pressure has a liberating and stimulating effect on life.

One thing is important, however: in such times we must not over do our triumph. The point is not to push on farther than is necessary. Returning to the regular order of life as soon as deliverance is achieved brings good fortune. If there are any residual matters that ought to be attended to, it should be done as quickly as possible, so that a clean sweep is made and no retardations occur.

Hex 40... Release (Re-lease)

Hi Rosada,

Your statement of Release (Re-lease overall commitment) is so much more civilized then the one that became Luis' new signature (thank gods there is a fiery dragon still to clear the air) but then some find release in sophisticated expressions of the highest sentiments and others can only burp their alimentary canals and dyspepsia...:D

I can relate with the "overwhelmed desire" and it really feels good when we let those words free, without explanations, isn't it ?
Happy for you.:)

Hi Luis,
The formless sack apparently becomes a phoenix worm and re-animates again powering the Wheel of Life. Another example of Release = Re-lease equilibrium. I agree it is a good joke upon those who take their bodily excreta so seriously.

THE IMAGE

Thunder and rain set in:
The image of DELIVERANCE.
Thus the superior man pardons mistakes
And forgives misdeeds.

A thunderstorm has the effect of clearing the air; the superior man produces a similar effect when dealing with mistakes and sins of men that induce a condition of tension. Through clarity he brings deliverance. However, when things come to light he does not dwell on them; he simply passes over mistakes, the unintentional transgressions, just as the thunder dies away. He forgives misdeeds, the intentional transgressions, just as water washes everything clean.

K'an means lawsuits and transgressions. Chen moves upward and lets the mistakes sink down behind it. In life this brings a release from tension similar to that produced in nature by the clearing of the air after a thunderstorm.

40 is standing in the circle of the 12 karmick hexagrams on the place of the Pericardium. This is the meridian that has to do with the ego. The energy of the pericardium, is the energy that is protecting the heart. The heart is your spiritual kosmick energy. But this pure energy has to be protected. The pericardium can give protection., then it closes the heart, but when it is learning it is opening the heart. Then it is not afraid for love, and it can not make real mistakes.

With a heart attack the heart is closed to long. The ego was too strong and it has worked to long on fear, and there has been not enough connection with the inner self, with the pure Heart (Love) energy.
With 40 this fear is gone, there is again a connection with the inner self possible. In the clock it is standing on the place of the autumn, the end of the autumn, there you know what you can take with you to the next year and what you need to leave behind. In autumn what has a relation with metal, is a lot of yang (heavenly energy). In autumn there is also a connection with the colour white. White are all colours together. The colour of no fear, of happiness, of love.

Six in the beginning means:
Without blame.

In keeping with the situation, few words are needed. The hindrance is past, deliverance has come. One recuperates in peace and keeps still. This is the right thing to do in times when difficulties have been overcome.

On the border between firm and yielding there should be no blame.

This line is in a strong place, but yielding by nature. It stands in the relationship of correspondence to the nine in the fourth place, which occupies a weak place but is strong by nature. The joint action of these balanced opposites brings order into the whole situation, and naturally everything goes well.

0 Nine in the second place means:
One kills three foxes in the field
And receives a yellow arrow.
Perseverance brings good fortune.

The image is taken from the hunt. The hunter catches three cunning foxes and receives a golden arrow as a reward. The obstacles in public life are the designing foxes who try to influence the ruler through flattery. They must be removed before there can be any deliverance. But the struggle must not be carried on with the wrong weapons. The yellow color points to measure and mean in proceeding against the enemy; the arrow signifies the straight course. If one devotes himself wholeheartedly to the task of deliverance, he develops so much inner strength from his rectitude that it acts as a weapon against all that is high and low.

LiSe was the first to point out to me the importance of the horn radical in the character Jie3-
In the old days so much was tied up with knotted ropes that most everyone carried a little piece of antler tip tied to their belts to loosen up knots. This was called a knothorn. Sailors call it a fid. This is the meaning of loosening or liberating. Also the meaning of forgiveness here - not tying ourselves up in knots anymore.

Structurally, hex 40 is the quiescent completion of the decad of hex31 or sexual attraction between man and woman. This is also the polar opposite from hex 39 or sexual energy intensified, here it is simple sexual satisfaction. Hex 40.2 is Release with the structure expressing and exhausting itself to yield Release>> Singing (hex 16). Thus in marriage regular sexual relations is the ultimate prize which serves all needs and brings all human rewards.

This is the "enough already!" Hex.

Very much a chill out Hex - a slap around the chops even. Gotta bring it all to resolution one way or another.

40. 2 seems to express that process where you've got back on the right path and in doing so naturally undermined the more unsavoury /disruptive aspects of oneself or the external circumstance in question. Or at least, this is the possibility open to the querent, depending on the wording of the question of course.

I almost see this as the warrior line retrieving the "gold" for the ancestors and doing what you originally set out to do. This line nearly always pairs with 41 for me as I've often got 41 as a follow up. Keeping it simple and reducing the extraneous or unnecessary goes a long way to fulfilling the line 2 directive and "bagging the game."

The good fortune of the perseverance of the nine in the second place is due to its attaining the middle way.

The trigram K'an denotes a fox, Li denotes bow and arrow. The second place, as the upper of the two lowest places, is the place of the field (nine in the second place in hexagram 1, Ch'ien, THE CREATIVE. {"Dragon appearing in the FIELD."}) The three foxes are three of the four yin lines, omitting the six in the fifth place.

Thanks Topal. "Getting back on the right path" makes more sense than "attaining the middle way."

Someone I knew got this line in relationship to a question about money due them from a trust fund. The executer of the estate had to be firmly dealt with as he seemed to misunderstand whose money it was but at last got her "golden arrow". So that fits with what your warrior and the ancestor's gold.

... The three foxes are three of the four yin lines, omitting the six in the fifth place.

Rosada:

If the three foxes are the three yin lines, maybe they are female foxes, foxes presence depicts sexual imagery.

In capitals W/B rendering:

田tian2: field / farm / / hunt / [IN THE] FIELD
獲huo4: to catch / to obtain / to capture / [ONE] KILLS
三san1: three / THREE
狐:hu2: fox / FOXES

得de2: get / gain / RECEIVES
黃:huang2: yellow // golden / bronze colour / YELLOW
矢shi3: arrow / ARROW

貞zhen1: divination / omen // perseverance / PERSEVERANCE
吉ji2: lucky / fortunate / [BRINGS] GOOD FORTUNE

Maybe Wilhelm said «foxes» thinking «vixens», but why he translates 獲huo4 as «to kill» instead of «to catch»?

獲huo4 has three components: dog + owl + hand, meaning:
... to capture / to catch / to reap / can / able / a slave-girl (!)
From Sears: http://www.chineseetymology.org/Cha...aspx?characterInput=獲&submitButton1=Etymology
To get a bird in your arm, like a owl in his perch, obedient like a dog (or like a slave girl): hunting related meaning, but not «to kill», better «to catch» and maybe «to tame».

By no means the text says that the foxes were killed but that they were captured.

Foxes are lonely hunters:
vixen - a female fox
fox - alert carnivorous mammal with pointed muzzle and ears and a bushy tail; most are predators that do not hunt in packs

from: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/vixen

Three foxes are too much for an individual hunter, but too little for a hunting expedition. The line is speaking of a lonely hunter, someboy like a fox. Not a killer(1), somebody that caught the foxes for getting the power that they grant → the golden arrow , the jackpot.

I prefer something like:

[In the] field catching three vixens.
Gaining [a] golden arrow.
Omen: lucky.

The lucky is not to have caught (or kill) the three foxes, but the access to wealth and love that they provide. And this is like to get the jackpot, like to get a golden arrow.

I'm affraid that because of defending foxes Brad got upset with me. Maybe foxes are dirty guys, maybe it's another the meaning of 狐:hu2

This character has two components «dog» and «gourd», well known symbols of «male» and «female», maybe Frank (K) has some reason. maybe 狐:hu2 means «love». Maybe it's only the story of making love three times in the field. Jackpot indeed.

Or maybe 狐:hu2 is a gentleman in the Fourth Way.

Yours,

Charly

Six in the third place means:
If a man caries a burden on his back
And nonetheless rides in a carriage,
He thereby encourages robbers to draw near.
Perseverance brings humiliation.

This refers to a man who has come out of needy circumstances
into comfort and freedom from want.
If now, in the manner of an upstart, he tries to take his case in comfortable surroundings that do not suit his nature, he thereby attracts robbers. If he goes on thus he is sure to bring disgrace upon himself. Confucius says about this line:

Carrying a burden on the back is the business of the common man;
a carriage is the appurtenance of a man of rank. Now, when a common man uses the appurtenance of a man of rank, robbers plot to take it away from him. If a man is insolent toward those above him and hard on those below him, robbers plot to attack him. Carelessness in guarding things tempts thieves to steal. Sumptuous ornaments worn by a maiden are an enticement to rob her of her virtue.
