Yes.

Not just faith that the process will 'work', but faith you'll be able to work with it.

Do you mean asking the I Ching about the relationship, or asking the other person? Either way, I expect you're right...

Thanks for posting, Pat. You're absolutely right about the irony. It's natural to fear inevitability - but isn't one of the purposes of divination to challenge the very idea of it?

As one who is very reluctant to consult, I concur. It is with a little trepidation that I do, as no one wants ill omens. Least of all, yours truly.
The irony is that the unwanted readings can actually help steer around difficulties, therefore be quite positive in the long term

Well, as I said above, by "love of serendipity", the other side of the coin is implied, that of fear of receiving bad omens.

You make a good point though with your second comment. We are in a minority, Hilary. The odd balls that study oracles. We have built a relationship with it while most others just think of it as senseless hogwash or, at best, an interesting attention grabber blip on their radar. For many of them it is a "cosmic black-box slot-machine" and it is the consequence not paying it the kind of attention that builds relationships.

"appears to show a seedling uprooted before it can grow, or a bird flying away"

This immediately called to my mind a flock of birds (blackbirds in my particular frame of reference) descending on a field, stripping it bare, and flying away again. I don't know if that speaks to the reading or not, but it feels right to me somehow.

I think maybe the difficulty comes in a perception of 'having a reading done': that you sit, and get answers dispensed to you from on high. It's not like an interaction with a friend, coach or counsellor because (the perception goes) you have no involvement in creating the message, and no recourse if you don't like it. Oracle as big, cosmic black-box slot-machine?

They're still my own musings.

I can see that love of serendipity could be an unspoken reason not to want a reading. (Especially if someone thought the sole purpose of it all was to tell the future.) But I'm talking about people who actually say, in so many words, that they're afraid to have a reading - not that they're not interested, or don't want one.
